I figured I'd tell ya a bit about my musical influences, what I've been listening to thru the years. It will probably be FAR from complete, but it'll probably give ya an idea of where I'm coming from (musically, that is). And I'll be lazy and just list them in no particular order:
David Bowie
Iggy Pop (as well as with the Stooges, of course)
MC5
Joy Division
The Cure
Siouxsie and the Banshees
Sex Pistols
Clash
Ramones
Marc Bolan & T Rex
999
The Adverts
Blondie
New York Dolls
Johnny Thunders
Supersuckers
Motorhead
Saxon
Iron Maiden
Riot
AC/DC
Sweet
Kiss
Zodiac Mindwarp and the Love Reaction
Black Sabbath
Swedish punk bands (e.g. Ebba Grön, KSMB, Stockholms Negrer...)
Ministry
Nine Inch Nails
Metallica
Tank
Bauhaus
Tom Waits
BB King
Albert King
Freddie King
Robert Johnson
Cream
Led Zeppelin
Joan Jett & the Blackhearts
Runaways
Dead or Alive (I know they're disco, but they do have a nice drive in a few of their songs... Especially "You Spin Me Round"...)
Sepultura (older stuff with Max Cavalera)
Soulfly
All about Eve
Rolling Stones (early stuff, up to "Tattoo You")
Beatles
Neil Young
Einsturzende Neubauten
Nick Cave
Public Enemy
NWA
Generation X
Billy Idol
Damned
Sisters Of Mercy
Mission
Genesis
Yes
Marillion (when Fish was still in the band)
U2
David Bowie and David Bowie and David Bowie
Iggy and Iggy and Iggy and Iggy and Iggy
Monster Magnet
I'll listen to basically anything with a good song. Sometimes it's the rythm that makes it a good song for me, sometimes it's the melody and sometimes it's simply the energy in the performance that makes it rock for me. And it's all basically rock in one form or other.
Right now, however, I'm in a metal phase. As heavy as possible, but I'm not too keen on bands that ONLY growl. I want the singer to sing. He/She can SING "growlyish" but there's got to be singing involved. I can't take the "Grrrr... Grrrrr...Grrrr" type of outbursts only.
This list is, as I mentioned, far from complete. And as you may have noticed, focuses on older bands and artists. Not too many newer bands on there, but I keep an ear open and listen in to as much new rock I can. But they don't really influence me in the same way as the above have done (and still do, I guess). And as this was supposed to be about my influences, I kinda drew the line there.
Later, peeps!
